Dimbola Lodge Exhibition

The Camera and Beyond : A collaboration between young people and artists working in other media.
An exhibition at Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight: 15th January - 28th February 2010.

Photography has a practical and metaphorical resonance in the context of our work. We have been impressed by how our young people have developed their photography, exploring individual interests as well as working together. A group of young people worked with No Man is an Island artists to produce an exhibition book showing their favourite photographs, as well as showing the images selected by the artists who interpreted them in other media, including poetry by Luke Kennard.
LOOK AT THE CLOUDS!
The hitman swigs from his monogrammed hipflask of port and looks at the clouds;
The politician disposes correctly of his nicotine chewing gum and looks at the clouds;
The primary school teacher lets go of the kite string and looks at the clouds;
The local celebrity tightens the strap under his bicycle helmet, takes a number from the lost cat poster and looks at the clouds;
The soldier stomps the sand off his boots and looks at the clouds;
The newsreader taps the menu on the picnic table as if it were her set of prop documents at the end of the bulletin and looks at the clouds;
The two year old, mid-tantrum, falls silent and looks at the clouds;
The Egyptologist stubs his toe, bites his lower lip and looks at the clouds;
The newlywed stockbroker throws a deep red cricket ball to his brother and looks at the clouds;
The anthropologist (we don’t know why he is crying) looks at the clouds;
The meteorologist on her nephew’s trampoline looks at the clouds;
The man physically assaulting his lawyer with a tennis racket stops inches from his face. He can feel his lawyer’s breath, the smell of garlic… tuna fish… and at once they both turn towards the dilapidated treehouse and their eyes are drawn inexorably upwards to look at the clouds;
That night his lawyer, typing up a letter to his lawyer gets distracted by the low, supperdish glow from his window and looks at the clouds;
The superhero looks at the clouds and then at his broken wristwatch, grimacing;
The prescriptive grammarian looks irritably at the clouds;
The middle-European Princess blows her nose one nostril at a time and looks through the tinted windows at the clouds;
The current holder of the World Wrestling Federation champion’s belt stops wrapping barbed wire around the top of an office chair for a whole minute to look at the clouds;
The installation artist looks at the clouds, at his empty wine glass, at the primly attractive agent, at his rival whose opening night this is, his rival who seems much more in his element socially than he remembers him being at art school, and he also has better hair, and out of the small portcullis window again at the clouds;
The man who posthumously inducted Patty and Mildred Hill, authors of ‘Happy Birthday to You’ into the Songwriters Hall of Fame dilutes an over-hot mouthful of lasagne with a swig of beer under the acacias on his patio, swallows, says ‘Oof!’ as he runs his tongue over the roof of his mouth and looks at the clouds;
The Freemason drops his little diamante axe tie clip, gasps in horror as it bounces in the gutter and falls down a drain then looks, plaintively, at the clouds;
The poet looks up from a review describing his work as “tedious and twee”, swears vengeance, thinks better of it and looks at the clouds;
The tax exile falls on his back trying to retrieve his nephew’s frisbee and looks at the clouds.
You look at the clouds.

Open Weekend 2009

We celebrated Open Weekend on the Isle of Wight with Quay Arts again this year, on Saturday 25th July, with a day of free hands-on activities, performances and workshops.
In the Seminar Room we held craft demonstrations and activities throughout the day. Visitors tried marbling on silk and paper with Sarah Falber and were able to ask Martin Swan about the painting he worked on during the day, which is also in our exhibition currently showing in the Rope Store Gallery. Melanie Swan showed felt making and Zoe Kennard demonstrated her wire and bead work. During the morning, Matt Splatt ran a very popular circus skills workshop in the Theatre followed by another interactive workshop led by Leigh Hofmann who, in association with Independent Arts, presented Soundbeam and Arkaos. This exciting and interactive tool allowed participants the opportunity to create both music and moving images.
Between 2 and 3pm, Luke Kennard gave a poetry reading and workshop in the Rope store Gallery. Luke joined fellow Pegabovine comedy writers and performers Matt Johnson and Tom Wateracre in the Theatre for their comedy writing workshop from 3-4pm. David George and the Utility Films crew recorded the day’s events and we’re delighted that the Isle of Wight Council’s Youth Connexions service funded signing language interpreters who were available throughout the day.
We took our activities to Havenstreet Steam Railway in the evening for families and friends of the Isle of Wight branch of the National Autistic Society and on Sunday we were at Naturezones, where we held our performance and activities 'en plein air' in the peaceful meadow setting. We were delighted to welcome green travellers who used the footpath and cycle track to reach us.
We had a wonderful weekend, with hundreds of visitors to our events, and we're looking forward to having some film clips to show you soon
You can also find our event on the map on the London 2012 website which you can view at www.london2012.com

Textile and Landscape

Exhibition 2: Learning Curve Gallery, Quay Arts, Newport, Isle of Wight
Working in response to Quay Arts first No Man is an Island exhibition (Inside Outside Artists Moving On) and to Jeanette Appleton’s Sow:Sew exhibition in their Michael West Gallery, we've been holding a series of felt making and textile workshops open to parents and carers. Working in collaboration with Quay Arts and the Isle of Wight Branch of the National Autistic Society (NAS), we were delighted to have a weekend workshop with Jeanette Appleton when Sow:Sew opened. Some of the weekend's work is included in our exhibition in Quay Arts Learning Curve Gallery, which is ‘growing’ throughout our 'Textile and Landscape' exhibition.
We have new pieces in the Learning Curve which are a response to the other exhibitions. We made a wall hanging decorated with flowers made from recycled clothes and pieces of felt, a reference to the Rope Store felt flower hanging and to Jeanette's installations. We still have our Knitting Nancy, which visitors are adding their stitches to, and our wildflower bed has undergone a conversion. Looking at some of the themes in Jeanette's exhibition and our interest in recycling, we now have a seed bed with a difference! Our own felt pods hang over a seed bed covered with felt made from recycled plastic bottles. The 'plants' which are emerging from the seed drills are formed of old plastic bags and scraps of fabric
When the exhibition opened, children helped to design the interactive installations to give a glimpse of an alternative world where all that grows is plastic and there is no need for water. We left seeds for visitors to make faces from and old water bottles form a fountain decorated with plastic tubes and fabric flowers. Dropping seeds into the bottles reminded us of the sound of dripping water.

Rope Store Gallery Exhibition

This will be the first exhibition of our Project, in the Rope Store Gallery at Quay Arts, the community Arts Centre for the Isle of Wight based in the Island's capital town, Newport. We're showing a core exhibition by some of the Isle of Wight artists and craftspeople who took part in Quay Arts 'Inside Outside' exhibition in 2004. We all live with autism in our families, as well as other so-called 'hidden disabilities' and once again we will be welcoming others to share our creative lives. We started our work with a fantastic group visit to the Cass Sculpture Park, Goodwood and we're working in collaboration with Naturezones, a wildlife reserve and education centre. Drawing inspiration from nature, and the way we live, the central collaboration brings together work by all the families. The exhibition will grow as it travels across the South East as part of the No Man is an Island regional Project. Working with the National Autistic Society and other community groups, we'll be working to achieve our aim to reach a grand finale in London in 2012!

The 'Inside Outside Artists moving on' exhibition will be held in the Rope Store Gallery, Quay Arts, Isle of Wight from 5th September to 10th October 2009.

There will be an open celebration evening with poetry, comedy and other entertainments at Quay Arts on Thursday 10th September from 6-9pm.

The No Man is an Island Project is funded by Awards for All and SEEDA.

Art and Islands Conference in Guernsey

On Tuesday 23rd June, I flew to Guernsey with Tim Johnson, a fellow artist from the Isle of Wight, to attend the Art and Island conference in Guernsey. The conference coincided with a series of talks by Wendy Lawson, the Australian author of many fascinating books on autism, hosted by the Guernsey Branch of the National Autistic Society.
'Art and Islands' was the 6th annual conference of the Small Islands Cultural Research Initiative (SICRI) and the theme was 'Art, Islands and Islomania'. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the culture of island communities around the world and to make links with the international community. The conference included a wonderful evening visit to Herm Island to see the Anthony Gormley sculpture and, before we left on Friday, we had the amazing chance to watch Andy Goldsworthy creating a temporary beach installation called 'Sand Stones'.
Images of the installations and conference are included in the Gallery.
I was delighted to be able to attend one of Wendy Lawson's talks while I was on Guernsey and to meet some of the National Autistic Society (NAS) Branch members. These few days were a great opportunity to build links with the Channel Islands and the international community, which we're looking forward to developing.

Making the wildflower bed

We learnt about meadow plants at Naturezones and potted some for our exhbition. We recorded the meadow colours in paint and in felt. Dick converted an old bed and Melanie made a felt bedspread up, adding pieces we made in the felt-making workshops. We felted the bedspread and Melanie laid the plants in it. We had lots of help from young visitors to the exhbition who watered them for us!
